Après avoir créé l'UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association) en 1914, Marcus Mosiah Garvey organise sa première convention en août 1920 durant laquelle il expose son projet de construction d'un État-nation africain; une idée qui obtient beaucoup de soutien populaire et entraîne une large adhésion.

L'organisation se développe rapidement et comprend environ 1100 succursales dans 40 pays alors que Garvey se rend dans différents endroits pour prêcher le nationalisme noir. L'UNIA continue de promouvoir le concept des États-Unis d'Afrique aujourd'hui.
