1919
Paris, France

The first Pan-African Congress is organized to coincide with the Paris Peace Conference that ends the First World War and is intended to influence the political agenda of the peace talks by presenting resolutions to the newly formed League of Nations. Held from 19-22 February 1919, the conference faces numerous organizational issues, including difficulties with obtaining visas for participants, but it nonetheless succeeds in gathering 57 delegates from 15 countries and in petitioning the Allied Nations to address the political and economic oppression faced by colonized peoples.
