1994
Florida, USA

In 1994, the state of Florida compensates nine remaining African-American survivors of the Rosewood race riot in 1923.

The Rosewood massacre was a racially-motivated massacre of Black people that also led to the destruction of their town in Levy County, Florida. More recently, this event has been termed a 'race riot' and stemmed from the wrongful accusations made by a white woman that she had been attacked by a Black man. Sixty years later, the survivors and their descendants decide to sue the state of Florida for failing to protect them, as a result of which Florida becomes the first USA state to pay compensation for damages relating to racial violence.
