Proposal to recognize slavery and the slave trade as crimes against humanity Paris, FranceThe French socialist minister, Christiane Taubira-Delannon, submits a proposal 'relating to the recognition of the slave trade and slavery as crimes against humanity' on 22 December 1998 and calls for the creation of a committee of experts to examine 'the conditions for reparations resulting from this crime'.

Calls for slavery to be recognized as a crime against humanity Paris, FranceOn 11-13 March 1998, Édouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau and Wole Soyinka organize a conference in Paris entitled 'Poétiques d'Édouard Glissant' in honour of the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in France (1848).

Silent march in Paris Paris, FranceIn April and May 1998, the French state organizes a series of events to commemorate the 1848 abolition of slavery in France. In response, over one hundred associations, mostly from the overseas departments, organize a silent march in Paris on 23 May 1998 to honour the memory of those who were enslaved.
