Le Forum TransAfrica est inauguré le 1er juillet 1977 sous la présidence de Randall Robinson, un avocat afro-américain, auteur et activiste. C’est une organisation à but non lucratif dédiée à la création «d'un public américain bien informé qui fait entendre sa voix dans le milieu des affaires étrangères pour s'assurer que les politiques humanitaires et économiques soutiennent les droits humains des personnes tout en renforçant leur autodétermination et en améliorant leur qualité de vie » (Forum TransAfrica).

Le Forum TransAfrica continuera notamment à lutter contre le régime d'apartheid en Afrique du Sud et s’efforcera de réduire la dépendance aux diverses aides, tout en promouvant un développement durable axé sur l'environnement. L’organisation plaidera également en faveur des réparations pour les Noirs en organisant une discussion sur ce sujet en janvier 2000.
